Oceania necklace
I love the jewelry of Oceania. In those island communities, there are celebrations and ritual exchanges of elaborate necklaces - still. The necklaces are often large and not every-day wearable - instead the exchanges have the purpose of building social networks. (Look up the Kula ring of Papua New Guinea.)
I made a shell necklace that is easily wearable (in fact, quite light weight) but has the feeling of Oceania. Maybe it, like the Kula necklaces, will get gifted or have several wearers in its time, building bonds between people.
It's strung from Java gooseberry beads and seed beads on Soft Flex wire. The centerpiece is made from mother-of-pearl, bone and Roman glass components. I made a little kundal spiral, a drop and a spotted button to complement the parts in the centerpiece. The shells are Zebra nerites, a purple-top cowry, and a limpet, all attached with waxed linen. It measures 19" long and the centerpiece hangs 4-7/8" from the middle, sitting firmly of the breast bone of a medium torso.
